Work
I still have not typed up our notes on “You and I.” Sorry, I’m sure the million of you waiting anxiously to read my blog are all crying in your soup. I’ve just been in a strange mood. And I have been super busy at work. It is a good busy, the kind of busy that makes me feel fulfilled. Today my very first motion was filed in District Court! It was just an Answer to a Complaint, but hey, still something! And soon, we will be filing my Memorandum in Support of Summary Judgment, Declarations, Exhibits, etc. for the other litigation case I’m working on. I am also working on rewriting the Procurement Manual- a ridiculously massive project where I am the central point of four very antagonistic forces. Every interested party wants something different, and they’ve wanted something different for years. It is a very contentious environment. But few of these people even know what Rights in Data is, so I really just have to stick to my guns, do what is best, and try my best to spin it to each party to get their approval in the end. So very not my personality, but I think I’m handling it all rather well. And the coolest thing, I just saved my employer some cut of 8 million dollars. I can’t really go into the details on anything I do. But I can say this --me, little law clerk, had to present my work to my boss’s boss – aka the woman who has the power to hire me after I pass the Bar. Of course, no one ever leaves the Office of General Counsel…at least not until they die. It is the Federal Government – they have a hard time firing employees, even if they come into work drunk, get arrested while at work, AND watch porn. Luckily, the government is having a huge turnover from the baby boomers, a LOT of people are retiring. I don’t know if a day goes by without someone’s retirement party happening. But that is Agency wide, not the OGC. Only one attorney has left in years. Needless to say, they don’t have too many openings for new attorneys…so my chances of being hired are minimal. But damn, I really want to stay here. I love where I work. I love what I do. *crosses fingers* The only shitty thing about working for the Federal government is that you don’t get partner benefits. One day this country will change, though, right? |
